YUMA EVENT #9

Getting ready for the event started early, we got there at 8am and the pits were started, and the beans cooking. 436 people attended the event, we were hoping to break the 500 mark but did not happen this year
People lined up for the food line. This year there was two serving lines and it work out real well, it always amazes me how so many people can be fed in such a short time.
Lot of time to visit and find out about caches that you could not find. Telling stories of your favorite finds, worst caches, and the scariest trails. All in all a perfect day for a cacher. B

BUBBLE AND LUTES LIFE IS FUN

Today over hundred caches came out, the start of a fun caching week-end. It is Yuma Event #9 time. Bubble blowing flash mob at the fountain in front of Lutes in the afternoon. Big turnout, and a lot of people in the streets since there was also mardi Gras going on in Old Town. Look close and you can see bubbles in the pictures.
JJ and W getting ready for warm up #9, get a quick bite to eat before everything gets crazy. Lutes is a very unique place, you notice something new every time your there.
We had half the restaurant and so many people still could not get in it was so packed.
Tomorrow at 8:00am the Yuma Event #9's BBQ will get started.

COFFEE TIME

RAIN!!! Well sprinkles to the rest of the county but rain here in Yuma, at least for a while this morning. Wayne was hungry for some good gravy so we headed for Ligurta Station. This is one of the few places in the country that still serves 5 cent coffee.

REVENGE

is the name of the new cache Wayne put in the front part of our lot. Wayne waiting for his new cache to be published. He gave up on that so we headed for the Casinos. First Paradise and then later the Q, one in Az and one in CA, did not make our millions. We met friends for dinner at Outback and soon as dinner was over Wayne's cache was published. Got home and there was still 4 people trying open the cache. On the 257th try the cache opened. Well maybe not that many tries but it took a while.

Today first thing we had more cachers.....took a while but all made the find. Once again nice having a new cache in the yard, have met 5 new people and visited with 4 friends. The best part of caching.

Below is tells about the cache and I would call this one truly evil.......
Have you every tired of hides where you have to drive many miles and then find that the cache is practically a nano hidden in 100 square feet of rocks? Or, where the one, with a sadistic personality disorder, places a micro in the middle of thorns, palm fronds, lemon trees or other near lethal like bushes? What about the “puzzle” caches where you have to be a Philadelphia Lawyer, rocket scientist or some kind of engineer to comprehend or figure out the solution? And then there’s the dude who fails to double check his coordinates and has you looking miles away from the actual placement; or, maybe the one who purposely gives incorrect coordinates which are a 100 feet off? If you have other pet peeves just add them to the list. If you’re not one of those “nasty cache hiders”, please accept my apology.Well this is my attempt to exact a bit of revenge. This cache has a combination lock, don’t worry, the combination is provided with the cache at the cache location. (This is a changeable lock.........so "Phone a Friend" may not work when you arrive.) there are 5 rows with 24 numbers each row and the combinations is somewhere on the sheet. At least he has the 4 numbers together you just have to try till you get it. OH Boy this is an evil one...... he changes the combination after each find.... BAD

Tomorrow is S*W*A*G breakfast so we will be out the door around 7am and then caching after breakfast, I hear we are going to head for Quartsite.......should be a long fun day.

BUSY THURSDAY

Wednesday we found out there was a problem with caches we had replaced last month. Around 30 or 40 of them were missing. Bill, Berta, Don, Andy, Wayne and I made plans to check it out the missing caches. As you know any planned day of caching starts with breakfast, this time we met at Ligurta Station. On to the desert to check out the caches. Kootenay Pirates from B.C. are the people that gave us a "heads-up" that there was a problem. We met up with them later in the day and let us know all the other caches were just fine and they found them all. We had a good visit with KP's and they gave each one of us one of there personal Geo Coin. Very nice couple.


Friday we met Frank and Suzannah for lunch at Lutes. As usual Lutes was packed but we got a table right away. Good food good company what more can I say. After lunch we checked out River days street fair. Seems like the same vender's each time. Had some Ice Cream before we headed our separate ways. Thanks Suz & FO for a good lunch and visit.

On to the casino must lost......BUT today I won 10 bucks!!!!!! maybe my luck has changed.

SUNDAY FUN

Started out at Day Breaker's for breakfast and then on to caching. A Team Yuma was headed for new territory, well at least for this year. First stop was a housing development then on to Adair Road. It was a busy place, lot of cachers out for the day. Thank goodness we ran into Bill and Berta, they helped us out on a couple we were having problems with.

Yuma, Arizona

This 800-foot-long suspension bridge spanned the Gila River when it was built in 1929, and was named McPhaul Bridge in honor of Henry Harrison McPhaul, "the only Yuma resident who ever became an Arizona Ranger." But it was considered to be too flimsy for modern traffic, and when a dam was built upstream in 1968 the river was diverted and the highway was rerouted over a much smaller bridge. This ultimately proved unwise, as a flood in 1993 destroyed the new bridge while the Bridge to Nowhere, with its broad span and high clearance, probably would have been just fine.

McPhaul Bridge crosses only desert sand and rocks these days, but the Arizona air has kept it remarkably intact. It would have been a fine location for a post-Apocalyptic Charlton Heston film....

It was a fun day but by 1ish we were ready to had home. It is now Monday and it is 68 on its way to 78 for the day. I am glad the wind has finally stopped and it is warming up.

New week an not much planned as of now. W does have a Dr appointment for tomorrow, will go with him if I get up and move around early enough. More later when we do something, I am trying to be better about taking pix's. Once again these are taken with my GPS.

ABOUT TIME TO MAKE AN UPDATE

On the 17Th we hit the street fair again in Old Town Yuma. The only good thing was the "Ribbon Fry's" they cook them when you make the order so they are fresh, they were so bad for us and so oily and oh so good. Afterwards we worked off the Frey's by finding a couple caches. The top pix is a view from Holiday Inn, and it is the fields, and business's along hwy 95.
Today Suzannah and I had a nice relaxing "girls" afternoon. A Lady in there park came to the rig and gave us a pedicure. Fun time, nice visit and relaxing. Suz and I got to catch up on with we have each been doing and. Frank and Suz will only be here for 3 weeks so we have to visit as much as we can. W and FO went caching while we had our "girl" time. Next stop for FO and Suz will be there place in Casa Grand.

This year there seems to be fewer "snowbird",the traffic is not as bad and there are a lot of spaces for rent in the Foothills and in the parks.

Here are some pix from Cassidy's basketball game, she is # 23. With her long arms she is good at rebounds. Doug sent a message "5 points, 5 rebounds, 1 foul 1 tired kid". If you know Doug you know he is a man of few words.

Have noticed the verveba bonariensis are blooming, will have to take a drive in the desert to see if there are more flowers in bloom, getting that time of the year.

STREET FAIR IN OLD TOWN

This week was armed forces fair. We got there late so some things were closed. As a matter of fact we just happened to drive by and saw the streets blocked off. Walked around and check out the booths, this took maybe 15 minutes. At least it got W walking some.
One of W's favorite was the belly dancer, imaging that! The snow man was cute, he would move around when you were not looking. I think it liked scaring kids and Old people, Decided to have lunch at Lutes, here is a picture of my lunch, Wayne had a boring cheeseburger. Mine was praline and Carmel Sunday. YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMY.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON

was spent on the bombing range caching......surprise!!!! It was a day running around in the RZR's finding caches. Took these pictures with my GPS, nice little camera on the Oregon 550 t. The desert is nice and green right now with all the rain we had last month. Have not seen any flowers in bloom in the desert this year. February and March we should be seeing the the desert in bloom.

Looked up Saguaros cactus on the Internet and they take up to 75 years to develop a side arm. It is estimated that saguaros can live to be 150- 200 years old. The cactus bloom in May and June so I never get to see them in bloom but the bloom is a creamy white flower with yellow centers that measured about 3 inches. So much more info on the net, check it out...

Of course we were on the Bombing range to cache. Not sure how many we found but know it was a bunch. Fun day but is was WINDY and cold, notice how we are all bundled up. Rain, wind, cold, snow, heat, nothing slows down a true cacher. Well snow and sleet might slow me up......

Rhonda and Steve bit the bullet and got a new car, 2011 Kia Hybrid that is all I know.... Nice looking and Rhonda was so thrilled.

0 DARK O'COCK

was the time we headed for the January S*W*A*G* breakfast at the Holiday in. Nice turn as usual, every month we get a few more people. Picture of the moon is just before we took the off ramp to Holiday Inn. JJ gave a presentation on using GASK and logging caches from the Oregon.

Now it is time to head for the bombing range for a day of caching, the Ateam is on the move. Stay tuned to see how the caching went...... B

ANOTHER SUNNY DAY IN YUMA

Has been a nice sunny week, Wayne took advantage of the nice warm weather and had the motor home washed and waxed. He did not want to have to sit and watch the MH being washed in the cold weather. It is also nice to have it done early before all the "Snowbirds" get here. More people are showing up everyday, as of now, all four spaces are filled on the lot where we are staying.

Went to the movies and saw Mission Impossible it was ok we enjoyed it. We now have our popcorn supply for the week, always get a big bag and eat one, then bring the refill home. Really surprised us the first time how fresh the popcorn stayed. Why doesn't home popped corn keep???? We hit the casino after the movie, since we were in the area, and believe it or not I WON, hopefully my loosing streak has ended. I do not expect to win every time but this loosing all the time was the Pitts!

Friday started with breakfast at Mad Chef and then a day of caching. Only found 6 or so but it took us to parts of town that we had not been to for a while. After breakfast and before caching we hit the casino, and I won again, can you believe that! Now I have a gambling fund that is all gambling money, how long that will last who knows. From there we went caching for a few hours, only found 6.

JJ, Char, La8, Audrey and us all met at Fun Factory for dinner, food was good, service awful..... will try it again if for no other reason I did not take picture one. That is right no pictures and the pictures that you see here was take with my GPS.

MORE FUN IN THE DESERT

Saguaro cactus this is a very old cactus since it takes 70 years before it get is first arm. When the sun hits the "teddy bear" cactus just right it looks like it is lighted. This is just a small sample of what we found in the Kofa national wildlife refuge.
The different mountain ranges around the Kofa refuge. Do not know the names of the mountains so, I just call them beautiful.... The color in the mountains change as the sun hits it and the pictures never do them justice.

Below is some pictures of white mounds left over from when mining was done in the Kofa's. JJ told me he would take me where I could make snow angles. Yeah right..... but is does sure look like snow. Larry even tired to hit me with a "snowball". The 4 of us had a fun time today checking out the Kofa's, on the way home we tired the Buffalo burgers at the "Log Cabin" good stuff.....

GIANT LIZARD

Driving back from the Desert we found this cute "little" critter. This is brown rocks formed in the shape of a lizard. How clever and simple is that? Now I am not even sure what street it was on, it is somewhere in the foothills. You never know what you will find next.

I am just glad in the years that we have been coming to Yuma we have not discovered any of the BIG eight legged thingies . There was a picture of one found a few blocks from us, it was on FB, I had to go by that post real fast.

Oh got to go, I think W is going to take me after Christmas shopping, well at least to Harbor Freight.

Had to edit this post, forgot to say what the lizard was made of.

Went to Dillard's, and Penny's and looked but found nothing I wanted. We went to Harbor Freight and Wayne found all kinds of goodies. Tomorrow I want to go to the Commissary and see if they have any Poppycock (Carmel corn with mixed nuts) if they do they will be on sale now that Christmas is over. Keep your fingers crossed. B

MERRY CHRISTMAS 2011

Jace, Bryce, and Gauge building a ginger bread house. What a great job they did. You know Gauge helped a lot. The boys were so excited when I talked to them this morning, they both were happy with there gifts, to numerous to say what they received. So happy with what they received from Santa. Rhonda and Steve was happy with there gifts too, Rhonda pots and pans Steve a coat. Wayne and I both got Coal..... not really but you would believe it.

Dinner was at Char and JJ's, this year was just family and us.... nice relaxing dinner, even the kids were fairly quite. It was all yummy and we all did it right and ate to much.

Another week and the New Year will be here, and if we do it right we will be caching on New Years day.

SUNDAY FUN

Sunday started out at Mad Chef, Char, JJ, Bobbie, LG, BillieB, BertaB, and W43 and COL, enjoyed good company and good breakfast. I think MC has the best sausage, of course the golf course is not bad. After breakfast the A Team headed for CA for some caching to work off breakfast. BB and BB went Christmas Shopping and I am not sure what Char had planned.

The A Team started out cleaning up caches in the Holtville area, and worked our way back to Yuma. It was one of the perfect cahing day..... Well I guess any day is a good caching day. Nice and sunny, later in the day the clouds look like Yuma was getting some rain. Sure enought when we got home you could tell it had rained in Yuma.
On the way back to Yuma we checked out the old Coranado Motor Motel, we would always go by on the freeway so I was thankful that Bronco Busters put a cache there. There was some good sneekie caches in the area.

Tues we hit the bombing range for the first time this year, not sure why it has taken us so long to get out there. A new "chirp" was posted so we headed out to make the find. I need the practice using my new GPS , you know the saying about teaching old folks new tricks or something like that.

Today was laundry day, the last time we did laundry was Dec 1, can you believe that. At home I do laundry ever other day if not everyday..... oh well got to do what you got to do.

FUN AND GAME IN THE FOOTHILLS

This is the first time we have made it to the world famous parade in the foothills. I think W would like to dress up the RZR and join the parade, time will tell on that one.

As you can tell it is kinda hard to take pictures when the floats zoom by so fast, it was a short sweet parade. Fun and games in the Foothills for the Old Folks...... Hope something exciting happens soon.
